Connected breathwork is a particular way of breathing for a period of time that enables us to connect with our bodies and travel to an altered state of consciousness where physical and emotional healing can spontaneously occur.
One of the most amazing aspects of connected breathwork is that you will experience the physical, emotional and mental benefits from your first session. I.e. you do not need to train at this practice before experiencing the amazing effects of it.
What are some of the benefits of connected breathwork?
Deep breathing can lower cortisol (a stress hormone) and decrease blood pressure but the benefits of connected breathwork extend far beyond these two amazing benefits.
Connected breathwork has also been shown to:
- Alkalise your blood pH
- Increase your mood by stimulating the release of "happy hormones"
- Have an anti-inflammatory effect
- Increase muscle tone
- Increase respiratory capacity
- Release suppressed emotion
- Aid in detoxification of the body
- Stimulate circulation
- Strengthen the immune system
- Enhance awareness of self-sabotaging
- Increase mental clarity and alertness
- Improve connection with spiritual self
What is a connected breathwork experience like?
You can think of connected breathwork like a very active meditation. You will be instructed to lie down in a comfortable position and will be taught how to do the breath correctly. In our Aromanosis practice we use a range of techniques (because they all give different results) but the most common will be breathing in and out of the mouth to increase the quantity of oxygen coming into your body.
As the oxygen levels build in your body you may experience some effects including:
- Altered states of consciousness
- Tingly in your extremities
- Tetany (cramping)
- Body shaking or movements
- The desire to release through yelling, yawning or sighing
Sometimes as we connect with our body, we feel the urge to yell, moan or yawn and/or to let it move (or sometimes we get shaking happening spontaneously). This is not something to be afraid of and is a very good sign that you are connecting and releasing negativity, trauma or tension.
Tetany can be confronting at first. It is usually experienced in the hands but it can also affect your feet, legs or even your jaw. It is not dangerous however and most people find that after a few sessions they do not experience it anymore. We will discuss tetany and all of the other effects in our classes and workshops as we delve deeper into our practice but I welcome questions at any time.
With all this being said, it may be that in your connected breathwork session, you sink deeply into the meditative state and your body stays perfectly still and quiet.
There is no wrong or right and what you experience in any given breathwork session is perfect for you. In Aromanosis we trust the body and unconscious to guide us towards our highest good.

Contraindications of connected breathwork
While breathwork has shown to be incredibly healing and helpful for many people there are a few situations where we do not recommend it (or need to alter certain practices).
Please advise me if any of the following apply to you and we can discuss the suitability of this practice for your unique situation:
- Detached retina
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Cardiovascular Diseases (including prior heart attack)
- Mental disorders (manic disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), paranoia, psychotic episodes, depersonalization, etc.)
- Strokes, TIA´s, seizures or other brain/neurological conditions
- A history of aneurysms in your immediate family
- Use of prescription blood thinners
- Hospitalized for any psychiatric condition or emotional crisis within the past 10 years
- Osteoporosis or physical injuries that are not fully healed
- Acute somatic and viral diseases
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Chronic diseases with symptoms of decompensation or terminal illness
- Individual intolerance of oxygen insufficiency
- Low Impulse Control
